Songs are my passion…
I began writing songs on a used Yamaha acoustic guitar that I picked up after my freshman year in college, while working as a YMCA camp counselor. All my early songs were written on that acoustic guitar.
My first song was a three chord, fast 3/4 time tune, more than a little Dylan-esque. After that, every song I wrote for years and years had one new “chord” that surprised me. I would often wait until I discovered that special moment, that special chord. I’ve since expanded that curiosity to include all the musical elements: melody, rhythm, lyric and structure.
My approach to songwriting broadened considerably at NYU, where I studied with musical theatre legends like Mel Marvin and Grammy Award-winning songwriter, Phil Galdston. Today, I feel that I can begin anywhere, in anyplace and with anyone. As my teacher and mentor, Fred Carl (Associate Professor at Tisch’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program) says: “there’s always more where that came from.” I found out quickly that he was right.
For much of my songwriting life, I wrote music and lyrics. Over the past 10 years, however, I have enjoyed and now prefer leaving the lyric duties, or at least most of them, to others— the “words” people.
Here are some of my songs, organized in broad categories:
Rock/Pop
Jazz/R&B
Musical theatre
